1st Traffic Light Installed 101yrs Ago
05 08 15 - 20:19The predecessor to today's traffic lights was a sketchy gas operated unit (invented in the UK) but it was proven to be ineffective & disposed to spontaneously explode at the most inopportune times.
The device that we are familiar with these days, got its start in Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 5, 1914, where it was installed @ the corner of 105th and Euclid.
These new fangled lights offered a much needed respite to policemen, who had been forced into the middle of the crowded streets to direct cars and horse-drawn wagons, even in the throes of a lousy midwestern winter.
Happy Birthday to the policeman's best friend.
